Because beauty isn't just about pretty things. It is perspective.
"I am going to make everything around me beautiful. That will be my life."
Elsie de Wolfe
Looking back, I realize that quote has quietly guided the way I move through the world. I didn't realize it then, but I think I have quietly built my life around that idea: the belief that beauty is not something we simply surround ourselves with. It is something we practice.
I recently came across the phrase The Beauty Way, which describes beauty as both a path and a way of moving through the world. It is choosing to notice what is lovely, and intentionally bringing more of it into our everyday lives.
That idea feels deeply familiar.
I found it in Los Angeles, beneath golden light and endless skies. And I found it again in my new home in Palm Beach, which I have called my hometown for the past 3 years. The blush of pink stucco at sunset, green shutters against an impossible blue sky, bougainvillea spilling over garden walls, the softness of salt air.
Moving here for the majority of the year was more than a change of address. It was a return to color, light, and joy, and a reminder to pay attention to the details that make a life feel beautiful.
To me, beauty is not about perfection or simply creating pretty rooms. It is about intention. It is hospitality. It is the way we care for our homes, and the way our homes care for us.
This journal is my little corner of The Beauty Way, a place to share the details that inspire me: my lifelong love affair with bamboo, the transformative power of trim, the art of the beautifully styled bar cart, vintage discoveries, hand embroidered monograms, exquisite pleated and trimmed lampshades, and why pink and green will always have my heart.
Because when we make our surroundings beautiful, we change the way we experience our lives.
And if I can invite you into my world (sharing the places, objects, and details that inspire me) and help you bring a little more beauty into your own, then I consider that a life very well spent.
With love,
Hillary
